The Brahma Kumaris is an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to helping individuals transform their perspective of the world from material to spiritual.
How It All Started
Dada Lekhraj Kripalani, a retired businessman, founded The Brahma Kumaris in 1937 in Hyderabad (now in Pakistan). His spiritual name is Prajapita Brahma and he is lovingly called Brahma Baba. After a series of visions in 1936, he was inspired to create a school where the principles of a virtuous and meditative life could be taught. The original name was ‘Om Mandali’.
In 1950, the group moved to its present location in Mount Abu, India. By then it had grown to nearly 400 individuals living as a self-sufficient community devoted to spiritual study and meditation. After guiding the creation of many centres, Brahma Baba passed on in January 1969 — an ordinary human being who achieved greatness by humbly living the deeper truths of life.
Today the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University is headquartered in Mount Abu, with a network of centres in over 110 countries. It is an accredited international non-governmental organisation with General Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
The Brahma Kumaris in Africa
In a world torn apart by materialistic values, the message of the Brahma Kumaris is that lasting peace, happiness and prosperity come from living with spiritual values. This journey begins by exploring who we truly are and reconnecting with the Divine Source.
To share this message in Africa, the journey began in 1974 with the establishment of Brahma Kumaris centres and the teaching of Raja Yoga meditation. A regional coordinating office, established in Nairobi in 1978, now guides major projects and retreats that serve communities across the continent.
In African culture, Ubuntu speaks of our interconnectedness and the responsibility to one another that flows from it. In this spirit the Serve Africa project was born — in 2004 the Brahma Kumaris committed to grow beyond 16 countries, and by 2006 teachers and students from across the world had worked together to establish 78 centres dotted across Africa, empowering many to integrate spiritual values and meditation into their lives.
Leadership
The founder put women in charge from the very beginning. Although women hold the top administrative positions, decisions are always made in partnership with all involved — a consensus model of leadership based on respect, equality and humility.
Administrative Head
Administrative Head of the Brahma Kumaris. She has been with the BKs since childhood in Delhi and served with the founder, Brahma Baba, opening centres in India. In 1974 she began serving abroad, establishing a BK presence in North America — first in the Caribbean (1976) and then in New York (1978). She is president of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization of the USA, regional coordinator for the Americas and the Caribbean, and represents the BKs to the United Nations.
Additional Administrative Head
Additional Administrative Head of the Brahma Kumaris. Born in India, she moved to London with her family as a child and was instrumental in bringing Raja Yoga to the West. She is the regional coordinator for the Brahma Kumaris activities in Europe and the Middle East, and CEO of Brahma Kumaris, UK.
Regional Director, Africa
A woman of vision, resilience, courage and determination, balanced with a humble and loving nature. Regional Director of the Brahma Kumaris in Africa. She has practised Raja Yoga meditation since 1965 and, in 1974, accepted the challenge to come to Africa to establish centres of meditation and spiritual learning.
A spiritual movement dedicated to personal transformation and world renewal. Peace begins within.
